Sweet cassava, a starchy tuberous root, is also known as manioc, yuca, balinghoy, mogo, mandioca, kamoteng kahoy and tapioca root. Despite being known as yuca, it is not the same plant as yucca, which is a fruit-bearing shrub in the Asparagaceae family. Sweet cassava is native to South America and Africa, but grows well in tropical and subtropical regions across the globe. Cassava is the third largest staple crop in the world sustaining over half a billion people living in developing regions. Cassava is an ideal crop as it thrives well even in drought-conditions in poor soil. Cassava is classified as sweet or bitter, based on the amount of harmful precursors found in a kilogram of the raw root. Sweet cassava contains the lowest amounts of these precursors, and for this reason, bitter cassava is usually only resorted to as a food source in times of severe famine. However, with proper preparation, these substances are effectively and safely removed from the root in both sweet and bitter varieties of cassava.

Cassava has many nutritional advantages. Cassava contains nearly twice the amount of calories found in potatoes, with 160 calories per 100 grams of cassava. Cassava is low in fats and proteins, however, contains more protein than found in foods like yams, potatoes and plantains. Cassava is high in B-complex vitamins, including folate, thiamin, pyridoxine (vitamin B-6), riboflavin and pantothenic acid. Cassava also contains other important vitamins, minerals and nutrients such as zinc, magnesium, copper, iron, potassium and manganese. Cassava is also free of gluten, making it an ideal starch for individuals with celiac disease or gluten-sensitivities.

Prevents neural tube defects
Cassava contains high amount of folate, the naturally occurring form of synthetically derived folic acid, that plays an important role in the prevention of neural tube defects in a fetus. A single cup of cassava contains 14-15% of the recommended daily amount of folate. Folate, unlike folic acid, is more bioavailable and much more easily processed, absorbed and utilized by the body than folic acid.

Blood pressure and osteoporosis
Cassava contains magnesium and copper, both of which are known to help promote overall health and well-being. Adequate consumption of foods containing magnesium and copper may help to lower high blood pressure and reduce the risk of osteoporosis with age. Additionally, a diet rich in copper may help support healthy functioning of the nervous system. A single cup of cassava contains as much as 23% of the recommended daily amount of copper.

High fiber
Cassava is exceptionally high in dietary fiber and is a very carbohydrate-rich food. Adequate consumption of dietary fiber, such as that found in cassava, is believed to offer countless benefits including lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol levels, and more stable blood sugar readings. In addition to these benefits, dietary fiber helps promote overall health by regulating bowel movements and healthy functioning of the gastrointestinal tract.

Menstrual regulation
The peelings and stems of cassava are believed to contain high amounts of phytoestrogens, which may help to regulate menstrual cycles that are unpredictable, irregular or especially heavy. The phytoestrogens in cassava may also help to promote healthy ovulatory function.

Fertility and twins
Due to the phytoestrogens found in cassava, consumption of this root is believed to play a role in a significant increase in overall fertility and even the rate of twins in a population. A specific tribe of people in Africa, known as the Yorubi, have a twinning rate of 1 out of every 11 pregnancies. This number is especially high when compared to the average twinning rate of 1 in every 33 births in the United States and is believed to be due to the high consumption of cassava. This increase in the rate of twins is believed to be the result of the phytoestrogens increasing the body's production of follicle-stimulating hormone prior to ovulation. An increase in follicle-stimulating hormone prior to ovulation has the potential to increase the number of follicles that release a mature egg at ovulation. If more than one follicle releases a mature egg, and more than one of those eggs is fertilized, the chance of conceiving fraternal twins is greater. When using cassava supplements for increasing fertility, cassava is believed to reach peak effect after four to six months of use, becoming more effective the longer cassava is taken.

Hormone replacement
For women going through menopause, cassava may offer an alternative to pharmaceutical hormone replacement. There are countless herbal hormone replacement options available, however, many are accompanied with unpleasant or undesirable side effects. Cassava is believed to offer a gentler alternate to herbal hormone replacement and similar to use for fertility, reaches peak effectiveness after four to six months of use.

Suggested Dose:
3-6 capsules per day

There are no known contraindications for sweet cassava supplements, however, limited research shows that individuals who are sensitive to latex may be more prone to allergic reactions to cassava.

    I love those sweet cassava pills! When I take 3 pills per day I feel good and when my period after I can feel my ovaries pain for 2 days that's reason high quality! I feel fine everything and too much wet too.

    I haven't gotten pregnant yet so I can't give my honest opinion about it....shipping was quick...have been taking it for a few months now.....maybe something else is wrong internally

    Shipping was fast. I take 10 sweet cassava pills a day and I feel great. I chose this product because it's very natural and I'm hoping to take it for two months before i start trying to conceive.

    I took 6 sweet cassava root supplements per day for 4 months before we started trying to conceive and we got pregnant on the first cycle! With our first two kids it took longer so I will definitely use it again!

    I have bought cassava from another source and not only was it a tiny bottle, it did not appear to have the sweet cassava skin in it. This cassava was an excellent value and the cassava definitely has the skin mixed in. Definitely a well made product.
