Product Description

A small shrub known as the chaste tree grows in the eastern Mediterranean. This shrub is often referred to as vitex as well and can be found in the more temperate climates of Africa as well. Bearing purple flowers and peppery fruit, the berries have been used medicinally for thousands of years. The leaves are believed to also contain medicinal properties but to a lesser extent than the properties yielded by the berries. In fact, the use of chaste tree berries medicinally can be traced as far back as the time of the ancient Greek physician Dioscorides. Originally, chaste tree berries were believed to help soldier's wives remain faithful while their husbands were away at battle, but no modern research has been able to conclude or suggest that chaste tree berry actually does decrease libido. Chaste tree was used historically by both men and women in ancient Greece and Rome and even by monks in the Middle Ages to suppress sexual desire. Chaste tree berries have also been believed to assist in the stimulation of lactation and to address problems and discomforts related to the spleen, the female reproductive system and childbirth. Chaste tree berries have also been used to assist in the healing of external wounds.

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS)
Chaste tree berry has been used traditionally to help alleviate the symptoms associated with premenstrual syndrome (PMS). These symptoms include acne, swollen and tender breasts, insomnia, fatigue, irritability, tension, mood swings, anxiety, depression, cramps, muscle fatigue, changes in appetite, headache, backache and constipation. For some women, these symptoms may be severe and affect daily activities. Many studies have suggested that the use of chaste tree berry may be beneficial in the treatment of premenstrual syndrome.

Chaste tree berry is believed to contain multiple phytochemicals that act on the body in a similar manner as naturally occurring hormones such as progesterone, testosterone and androstenedione. Chaste tree berry is also believed to naturally contain steroid pre-cursors that affect the body in a similar manner as estrogen. These phytochemicals, hormones and precursors are believed to help restore hormonal balance to the body in pre-menopausal and menopausal women. The hormonal balancing effect of chaste tree berry may help reduce symptoms related to menopause, such as, hot flashes, night sweats, irritability and fatigue.

Chaste tree berry is believed to have a positive effect on female fertility. Multiple studies have suggested that the use of chaste tree berry may help promote an increase in the levels of progesterone in a woman's body following ovulation. Progesterone deficiencies following the release of a mature egg at ovulation may inhibit conception, reduce fertility and decrease the odds of a successful pregnancy from occurring. This progesterone boost may help to lengthen a short luteal phase, improving overall fertility and increasing the chances of successful conception. Some German studies suggest that the use of chaste tree berry into the third month of pregnancy when the placenta takes over the production of progesterone, may help to reduce the risk of miscarriage.

Menstrual regulation
Women experiencing irregular menstrual cycles may benefit from the use of chaste tree berry. Chaste tree berry is believed to have the ability to assist in regulating the hormones that may contribute to irregular menstrual cycles. Women who are prone to irregular menstrual cycles, such as women with polycystic ovary syndrome, may especially benefit from the hormonal regulation chaste tree berry may provide. Chaste tree berry may also assist in regulating especially heavy, painful or long menstrual cycles.

Breast milk production
Some studies have suggested that low to moderate doses of chaste tree berry may help to increase a woman's supply of breast milk following childbirth. Chaste tree berry in higher doses, however, is believed to decrease a woman's milk supply due to a reduction in the levels of prolactin (a hormone necessary for milk production) in the body.

Polycystic ovary syndrome
The symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome, a condition characterized by excessive levels of androgens in the female body and the presence of multiple cysts on the ovaries, may be alleviated by the use of chaste tree berry. Chaste tree berry is believed to reduce the level of androgens in the body and assist in hormonal regulation. This hormonal regulation may help reduce the symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome, which may include numerous and painful cysts on the ovaries, facial hair, irregular menstrual cycles and infertility.

Male hormonal regulation
Just as chaste tree berry is believed to reduce the levels of androgenic (male) hormones in the female body that contribute to hormonal problems such as polycystic ovary syndrome, chaste tree berry may assist in the regulation of hormones in men. Especially high levels of these hormones in men can inhibit fertility and have a negative impact on the male system as a whole. For men with especially high levels of these hormones, chaste tree berry may assist in regulating these hormones.

Some studies suggest a significant decrease in the amount of acne on the face and body following the use of chaste tree berry supplementation. While the decrease in acne may continue for a period of time after chaste tree berry supplementation has ceased, it may return if chaste tree berry is not resumed or continued.

Women who are sensitive to hormones or using hormonal birth control methods may want to avoid the use of chaste tree berry due the hormonal influence it may have on the body. Chaste tree berry may affect dopamine in the body and individuals using medications that affect dopamine should avoid the use of chaste tree berry. Pregnant women should consult with a medical professional prior to using chaste tree berry in pregnancy.
